The History of Oxford Brookes University

Oxford Polytechnic became a university under the legislation introduced by the EC Government in June 1992.
A title had to be chosen and what better than one which celebrates the name of the modern founder of this new University, John Henry Brookes.
John Brookes was a visionary who, early in his career, began initiatives to open up educational opportunities to the young people in Oxford. He set up new courses in the arts, crafts and technology. He also believed passionately in education in its broadest sense.
He was the principal of the College of Technology, Art and Commerce from 1934 until his retirement in 1956, laying the foundations of the institution which was to become Oxford Polytechnic in 1970.
When he joined the then Oxford City School of Arts and Crafts in 1928, it was a small struggling evening institute operating tenuously from borrowed buildings scattered aroung the City. When he became Principal, Brookes began a 20 year campaign that, despite many setbacks, culminated in the creation of the wholy new campus we see today.
